Death's Obsession Review

My Initial Thoughts

When I first heard of this book, it was on Instagram. I had been hunting the book title down since the video that I had originally saw it on didn't show the title of the book and I became obsessed with finding it. I mean come on, what girl doesn't fantasize about the grim reaper, right? (Sorry darling!) The cover immediately drew me in because the crow is beautiful and symbolic to death itself. I was surprised at first by the fact that it was only 13 chapters but got over it when I remembered that I read Zane: Were-Zoo Book One. I read this book in a day, because dark romance and stalker... I'm normal.... Anyway, I started it late September 20th and into September 21st

About the book

Death did not take Lilith's soul when she was supposed to die. He constantly reminds her that she is his. Death was the one that kept her going and alive, leaving her treats, gifts, letters, and much more. Death stalks her, watching her sleep, and marking her. No one believes Lilith when she tells them that she saw him on the night of the crash. Now, she's chasing him.

Triggers

Triggers in this book are but not limited to: Death/Grieving, Mental Illness, Abuse, Suicide/Ideation, Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, Self Harm, Torture of Side Characters, Third Party Abuse, Substance Abuse, and Dubius Consent

My Goodreads review

I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads, though looking back, I would give it 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the book and as someone who was taking funeral classes at her college (I didn't complete it due to financial reasons...), I thought that it was a good read. I loved all the nicknames that Death, (I will not use his actual name on here since it is a spoiler), gave Lilith. I saw on Goodreads that people were complaining about her petnames and about the ending of the book. This upset me immensely. The ending of the book makes perfect sense. You can read my review on Goodreads AFTER you have read the book. I agree that it is not "Book of the Year", but it was still a good book that delves into topics that most are afraid to touch. Of course, people are entitled to their own opinions but I strongly encourage all to try viewing the book in a different light. The ending was bittersweet.

My final thoughts

Death and suicide are difficult topics to include in any book or conversation. If I learned anything from the funeral classes, it would be that we shouldn't shy from such topics as they are and unfortunately will always be a part of life. This book touched on the pure grief that Lilith has felt for many years and that she held all of it in and steadily worsened because of the tragic events in her life. I wouldn't even say that I wish the book was longer. It was the perfect length for a story like this. The message was loud and clear. The emotions felt while reading this book were unforgettable and it was something that I was able to connect with. Please, if anyone is feeling suicidal or anything similar, treat them kindly. Be there for them. Show them that they matter, because they do. For those suffering, know that you are not alone and that you are valued, even if you don't have anyone in your life telling you that or proving that. Human life is precious and I understand it gets hard... Trust me on that...But, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Things will always get better and Avina St. Graves, I commend you for writing not only a great smut, but for evoking the feelings that this book gives.
