Hooked (Never After #1) Review

My Initial Thoughts

I have had this book on my shelf for quite a while, and started to read it around May 1st. I set it down for a while due to wanting to read other books first. I know...Priorities. What drew me to this book was that it was a dark romance, which is my favorite genre of romance. I was interested in the Peter Pan retelling, and let me tell you, this book had some twists and turns that had me gasping in real life. I kept telling myself that I was going to read it, and then I was going to put it under the H category of the book challenge that I am working on, but I ended up buying another book that started with an H. So instead, this book became my one-word title category. It took me until September 12th to finally finish the book and write the review the same day. Shocking right?! At the time of reading this book, I was also reading five or six other books. It was a mess...a beautiful, romantic, twisted mess.

About the book

James, aka Hook, always had one thing on his mind as he grew up. He wanted to get revenge on his long-time enemy, Peter Michaels. He sees his way to vengeance when Peter's daughter, Wendy, enters his bar. With many twists, such as traitors in his organization, his plan starts to get dicey.  Wendy has always been the good daughter who stayed in her father's shadow. She can tell that James is a dangerous man, but still cannot help the attraction and desire that she feels for him.

Trigger Warnings

Triggers in this book include but are not limited to: Sexually Explicit Scenes, Breath play/Choking, Torture, Murder, Physical Assault, Kidnapping, Mentions of Pedophilia, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, and Physical Abuse of a Minor.

My Goodreads review

As I mentioned above, it took me a loooong time to finish this book. I fear the same will be for A Court of Thorns and Roses as well. I almost DNF'd it because of a scene very close to the ending, as it could be seen as incestuous. I am trying very hard to not spoil it, and I apologize in advance to anyone if it is a spoiler. I was so close to the end that I ended up sticking with it and was very glad that I did. I loved the ending of the book more than I thought I would. I gave the book 5 stars, and I genuinely meant it. My review on Goodreads does contain spoilers, so read at your own discretion.

My final thoughts

I feel like a broken record by saying that I almost DNF'd the book and that it took me a long time to finish it. Some things were going on in my life that I could not really focus on reading for quite some time, and my ADHD had me doing other things. I was also crafting and doing my embroidery then as well. That being said, I am glad that I own this book. I love having it on my shelf and plan to get the rest of the series at some point as well. It had me kicking and squealing. I thought the book was well worth the hype that I have been seeing buzzing around, and I think that if you were to read the book, you'd come to the same conclusions, if not similar.
